Engineering firm upgrades factory lighting for £3k annual energy savings

By its very nature Pentland Precision Engineering runs an energy intensive business, but saves almost £3,000 each year by having simply upgraded its factory lighting to LEDs.

Innovation in efficiency is critical to the engineering processes for Pentland Precision Engineering and an efficient approach is taken across most aspect of their business.

Pentland Precision Engineering is an Edinburgh-based specialist engineering solutions provider that offers advanced materials design, fabrication and engineering services across a range of business sectors (such as aerospace, agriculture, renewable energy and retail). Manufacturing and engineering are key sectors in Scotland’s economy, but they are also highly energy intensive. The company contacted our team for help in reducing its energy consumption.

Our specialists conducted a free on-site assessment of Pentland Precision Engineering’s facilities to identify immediate opportunities to optimise energy use. This included upgrading the business’s lighting system to high-efficiency and long-life LEDs. T8 and T12 fluorescent lamps were the primary source of lighting in the company’s administration and factory areas. Our team identified areas where the existing lamp fittings could be retrofitted to LEDs. The team then helped the client to fund the installation by supporting the company’s application for an unsecured, interest-free* Scottish Government SME Loan.

“By helping us to evaluate the feasibility of various energy efficient technologies and to calculate the payback period on our potential investment, the service made it easy to justify upgrading our lighting system to LED lamps, which has resulted in a significant saving on our energy bill.” Robert McCartney, Commercial Director, Pentland Precision Engineering.

Any Scottish small or medium-sized business can apply for the loan to afford efficiency projects around energy, water and waste. (*There is a 5% interest rate for renewable technologies to help organisations still claim the renewable heat incentive.)
