Co-Chomunn na Hearadh is a community-owned shop in Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris. The shop is spread over two floors with facilities including a mini supermarket, a gallery and a meeting space. Co-Chomunn na Hearadh stocks a regular supply of high-quality goods, including fresh fruit and vegetables.
It was predicted that 80% of the electricity consumed by the building was used to run the shop’s 18 refrigerated cabinets and freezers.
Co-Chomunn na Hearadh staff contacted the service for support in reducing the running costs of these appliances and improving energy efficiency. The team recommended that replacing the display chillers and freezers with high-efficiency units could reduce energy consumption by 40%, save the shop £3,750 per year and reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 17.9 tonnes.
“The SME loan and technical support received from the service made it easy to justify the investment in new refrigerated displays. Co-Chomunn na Hearadh is run for and by the people of Leverburgh, and the money we save through energy efficiency will be reinvested into expanding the business and enhancing the quality of service for the community”. Chris Ross, Chairman, Co-Chomunn na Hearadh.
Our team also supported the shop to successfully apply for the unsecured, interest-free SME Loan from the Scottish Government to fund the upgrade.
