Easy ways to show off your prized green credentials

52% of UK adults are influenced by the green credentials of a business and 21% of consumers have even stopped using a particular brand if they have environmental concerns. It’s becoming more and more important that you let your customers know what you are doing to be environmentally friendly.

Green is fast becoming everyone’s favourite colour.

A 2021 study revealed that 52% of UK adults are influenced by the green credentials of a business and 21% of consumers have even stopped using a particular brand if they have environmental concerns.

It’s becoming more and more important that you let your customers know what you are doing to be environmentally friendly.

It can also help you to attract the best employees. According to Debut, the graduate recruitment app, 89% of female and 80% of male students want to work for a business that can demonstrate its environmental credentials.

The question is, how do you do that?

Here are nine very simple ways you can show off your green credentials.

1. Write and share your environmental policy

A well-articulated and up-to-date environmental policy will not only keep your business on track, it’s also a great way to communicate your environmental credentials.

Our handy checklist and environmental policy examples will help you create an environmental policy worth shouting about.

2. Become a case study

Have you received support from Zero Waste Scotland’s Energy Efficiency Business Support Service? We are always on the look out for interesting businesses to share their story. Recent case studies have included a LEGO artist and a company set up by Alan Turing’s great-nephew. The stories that feature on our website are also included in our monthly ezine, The Bottom Line, that goes out to 12,000 subscribers and are shared with our 7,000 social media followers.

3. Join the Green Network for Businesses

This growing network brings together more than 200 businesses across Scotland that have all taken action to make their business greener: this may be through staff engagement, energy efficiency improvements or installing renewable technologies. It doesn’t matter whether you run a corner shop or head up a large corporation, you can join the network.

Your business will be showcased on the site and you will also be able to join the network’s LinkedIn group where you can chat with other members and swap tips or seek advice.

4. Be a social butterfly

Most businesses have at least one social media account, whether that be Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Instagram. There is no better place to shout about your green credentials than on a platform that is being followed by people who already have an interest in what you do.

Put together some simple messages with engaging images and your followers may well share your posts with their friends and followers helping to spread your green story.

5. Use your digital shop window

Your website is the perfect place to talk about your green credentials. When customers are shopping around they are likely to visit your site to see what you do and if you are the right fit for them.

If being environmentally friendly is important to what you do, put together a page detailing your company’s ethos; tell them about your solar PV panels; your recycling habits; your electric company cars.

6. Tell your staff

If being environmentally friendly is important to you and your business, share your thoughts and actions with your staff. You may want to display posters sharing your green messages or set up a green team to encourage further steps to actioning and promoting your ethos.

If being green is important to you and your customers and employees, make sure you take the time to share your message. Letting people know that your business is playing its part in tackling climate change will increasingly give you the edge.

7. Be an award winner

If there is one thing guaranteed to impress your customers and put you one step ahead of your competitors, it’s the kudos that comes from winning an award. And there is a wide selection that you can enter, including:

Don’t worry if the deadline has passed for entering this year. That just means you have plenty of time to work on your submission in 2022.

If being green is important to you and your customers and employees, make sure you take the time to share your message. Letting people know that your business is playing its part in tackling climate change will increasingly give you the edge.
