Renewable energy on display at Templehall Farm

Seeing the real-world potential of renewable energy on farms

We were delighted to attend ‘Farm-Scale Renewables: The What, The Why, The How’ at Templehall Farm in Pencaitland on 2 July. Organised by the Farm Advisory Service, this event brought together farmers, rural business owners and energy experts to explore the real-world potential of renewable energy in agricultural settings.

The day was packed with insight. For those considering how to begin or progress their own renewable energy journey, the event offered far more than just theoretical discussion. It was a chance to step onto a working farm and see how renewable technologies can be successfully integrated into daily operations. The atmosphere was one of curiosity and collaboration, with attendees eager to learn from both the speakers and each other.

Templehall Farm served as a powerful case study. Over the years, the farm has embraced a range of renewable technologies, each carefully chosen to suit its operational needs.

Delegates got up close to see the 100kW wind turbine that is harnessing the area’s natural wind resources, and a 990kW biomass boiler that is providing the farm with a robust and sustainable heating solution.

Complementing the wind turbine and biomass systems, the farm also boasts a 150kW solar PV system, which captures solar energy to further reduce reliance on conventional power sources.

Together, these systems not only reduce emissions but also support long-term cost savings and energy independence.

Seeing these technologies in action and hearing directly from those who manage them gave attendees a clear sense of what’s possible when innovation meets practical application.

Events like this are vital. They bridge the gap between ambition and action, helping rural businesses make informed decisions about their energy future. We left Templehall Farm inspired, informed and more committed than ever to supporting Scotland’s path to net zero.
